Khushi Kabir, President of BotTala, became involved in the citizens’ rights movement in 1972, immediately after the independence of Bangladesh. At that time, she worked while living in remote rural areas of the country. Through firsthand experiences of rural people’s lives and struggles, she dedicated herself entirely to the pursuit of social transformation.
In 1980, she joined Nijera Kori, a renowned national-level non-governmental organization that empowers rural poor communities to claim their rights and entitlements through awareness-building and collective organization. Through Nijera Kori’s movement of “conscientization,” she played a pioneering role in building a strong, self-reliant, and rights-conscious civil society.
Khushi Kabir has been tirelessly working for gender equality and women’s empowerment, the rights of marginalized communities, environmental justice, cultural freedom, food sovereignty, democratic values, and accountable governance — all through a feminist perspective. She continues to play active roles in various national, regional, and international organizations and networks.
Driven by the vision of creating a just, equitable, and inclusive society, she works relentlessly for fair land rights distribution, environmental protection and justice, resistance against religious extremism, women’s rights, and the establishment of human dignity.
